There was a time when people in our village were scared of Postmen and Telegrams!
Later Landline phones came to our houses. When I was a kid we had a phone at North Parur, Kerala, the no. was just 237.There were only very few houses in North Parur and almost all the families knew one another. People knew others from the family names or house names. People were friendly, they gathered together often, and everybody knew what was happening around.
Whenever there was an accident or death in any of the relatives of neighbors, we get a telephone message. It was me and my father who had to pass the message to their relatives staying near by. Once an old lady fainted when she saw my father opening the gate and entering their compound since it was the third time in an year we had to convey the sad news.
Then came the hands-free phones, pager, etc., and later mobile phones. People started walking while talking. Now that everyone has a mobile on their own and whats app too, people love to be on themselves, enjoy the messages shared, they do not need the company of their friends as they have so many virtual friends whom they have never even met once.
Now, information are at fingertips, but education has not been so 'subtle' (sookshmam) as before; it has become 'gross' (sthoolam). People are unable to understand each other although they live in the same building and travel in the same local train daily.
Bhaja Govindam Bhaja Govindam
Govindam bhaja mooda mate
Sampraapte sannihite kaale
Nahi nahi rakshati "what'sApp!" karane.
